On Friday, Jan. 30, the boy’s varsity basketball team took on 8-4 Boston Latin on senior night. Despite a strong Wayland student section in the field house, Boston Latin won 70-59, but the Warriors showcased several flashes of talent throughout the game.
Before the game, each senior and their families were called out for pictures. Guard Will Walters, guard Charlie Feldman, guard/forward Armaan Desai, center Anish Vishwanathan and manager Devlin Murray were all celebrated, as well as senior cheerleaders Torryn Carlson, Jayda Ortega and captain Marianna Rublev.
In the opening minute of the game, the teams traded buckets, with Vishwanathan scoring the first points for Wayland to tie the game at 2-2. Boston Latin then seized control, capitalizing on a full-court-press and converting on fast-break opportunities. The Warriors struggled to move the ball, and in the blink of an eye, Boston Latin jumped out to a 20-4 lead halfway through the first quarter. This forced first-year Wayland coach Jeff Brewington to burn a timeout.
Following the timeout, junior guard Jack Renneker began to heat up, scoring a layup and a three-pointer on back-to-back possessions and sparking a Wayland run. However, their momentum was quickly halted when junior Josh Grossman committed an offensive foul, and moments later, stepped on Boston Latin’s senior captain Maxwell Mendoza, drawing an immediate whistle. Mendoza retaliated with a shove, and after a brief discussion by the officials, both Grossman and Mendoza were assessed technical fouls and ejected from the game.
The teams traded buckets in the final minutes of the opening quarter, and Boston Latin still led 28-18, though Wayland had recovered from the early 20-4 disaster.
The second quarter was close until the final few minutes, when Boston Latin scored back-to-back buckets to head into the locker room with a 44-29 lead.
Both teams started off cold out of halftime, missing multiple shots before Boston Latin began to pile onto their lead, and with 2:04 left in the third quarter, the Wolfpack had moved ahead 56-33.
As the game continued into the final minutes, Wayland put together a 24-9 run that brought them within eight points with just under two minutes remaining in the game. Renneker continued hitting three-pointers, and junior captain Joshua Lewis-Guy started to get into a rhythm, earning stops and scores on each end of the floor.
Despite a valiant effort, Wayland’s comeback efforts fell short, and the Warriors lost 70-59. Renneker scored a season-high 28 points in the losing efforts, along with Lewis-Guy’s 15.
The Warriors will face Concord-Carlisle at home on Friday, Feb. 6, in a must-win Dual County League (DCL) matchup.

"The exterior is still a nice monument to remember buildings [involved in] water history," Hoey said.
