On Friday, May 1, the girls varsity softball team made an eight run comeback in the sixth inning against Cambridge Rindge and Latin School (CRLS) to take home a 10-9 win for Wayland.
CRLS dominated the first five innings, and by the sixth inning, Wayland was down 9-1. In the 6th inning, Wayland got their bats going and started to string some hits together. Wayland came back to make the score 9-7 before Wayland broke through to score more runs. Wayland tied the game on a double steal from senior Aubrey Calabro to to make the score 9-9.
“It was a great feeling to have the opportunity to tie the score up,” Calabro said.
Senior Vivian Brevard then had the go-ahead hit, putting Wayland ahead 10-9 and capping off Wayland’s miraculous comeback.
“I felt really excited because we were down by eight, and I was just so hyped to see everybody finally hitting their stride,” Brevard said.
In the top of the seventh inning, Wayland came onto the field with a strong mindset, hoping to hold the other team at 10-9, which would secure Wayland the victory.
“I kept thinking about if a ball gets behind me [in the field], there’s two people on, and that’s two runs we’d be down, and so I was very stressed,” Brevard said.
Senior captain Sophia Beckett’s pitching was on point, but CLRS still managed to get on base. Wayland secured two outs, and then Beckett got the next batter’s ball to pop up to the catcher. Freshman catcher Sophia Gorki threw off her helmet and caught the final ball, securing the 10-9 win for Wayland.
“The most challenging moment for me was catching in the last inning because we were up by one with runners on base,” Gorki said. “It was a very high pressure [filled] moment. I stayed focused by just taking it one pitch at a time and holding our lead.”
