On Tuesday, May 5, the varsity baseball team took on Boston Latin in a Dual County League (DCL) matchup.
The Warriors entered at 4-8, having lost eight of their last nine games after an encouraging 3-0 start. Boston Latin entered at 3-11, with six of their losses coming by three or less runs. Due to field renovations, this was the Warriors’ first home game of the 2026 season.
The Warriors started off strong, as junior starting pitcher Mikey Johansson retired the first three batters in just thirteen pitches. After a leadoff single from freshman outfielder Nico Deranian, Wayland took a 2-0 lead thanks to an RBI triple from senior captain Albin Valdez and an RBI double from freshman second baseman Lucas Cooley.
“It was important for us to get ahead early,” Valdez said.
The uncommitted senior plans to play college baseball at either Coppin State University (Division I) or Assumption University (Division II) next year.
Neither team scored in the second or third inning, but Boston Latin made their move in the fourth inning. After a leadoff single and a couple of walks, the Wolfpack found themselves with the bases loaded and only one out. Ahead in a 1-2 count, Johansson hit Latin catcher Sean Findlen, putting Boston Latin within one run. With the bases still loaded, Johansson beared down, inducing an RBI groundout and a pop-out to escape the jam and keep Wayland in a 2-2 tie.
In the fifth inning, Boston Latin put together a two out rally, as they had three straight singles to make the score 3-2 and give the Wolfpack their first lead of the game.
Then, the offense finally came back to life for Wayland, as freshman catcher Jack Hartunian hit an infield single that turned into two bases after a Boston Latin throwing error. Deranian bunted Hartunian to third, and Valdez drove him in with an RBI single that tied the game. However, the Warriors were far from finished. Cooley earned a walk, and then junior Cooper McFarlane hit a two-run single to put Wayland back ahead 5-3.
After sophomore George Bressler’s two-run, double knocking Boston Latin’s starting pitcher out of the game, junior Owen Harrington hit an RBI single to make it 8-3. The Wolfpack finally escaped the inning, but not before allowing another run from a throwing error that made the score 9-3.
Wayland continued to ride their momentum in the sixth, as McFarlane replaced Johansson on the mound and retired the Wolfpack in order. Wayland picked up one more run to extend their lead to 10-3, and although Boston Latin mounted a late rally with a few runs in the seventh, it was too little, too late, as Wayland comfortably held on for a 10-6 victory.
Johansson earned the victory on the mound, tossing five innings and allowing three runs off six hits. “I felt good out there, and I was happy with how I battled in some really tough spots,” Johansson said.
For the Warriors, it was truly a team effort, as the team combined for ten hits coming from eight different players to improve their record to 5-8. As Wayland lost to Concord-Carlisle on Friday, Wayland’s record is now 5-9, heading into a game against Lincoln-Sudbury on Monday, May 11, at Polar Park.
