On Thursday, September 27 the freshman (class of 2016) elected their president, Daniel Keating.
The election proved to be intense, with the candidates campaigning significantly more than in previous elections.
“I brought baked goods to school and bracelets that say ‘Vote for Soph’ on them and handed them out at school,” said candidate Sophie Pederson.
“Originally, my biggest competitor was Sophie,” said Keating. “I was kind of intimidated by her with all her campaigning.”
In comparison, Keating took a more laid back approach in terms of advertising.
“I just kind of threw a slogan on Facebook before the election,” Keating said.
Others had a more involved procedure. Junior class president Josh O’Neil decided to endorse candidates Bobby Jones and Jimmy Lampert and posted on Facebook in support of them. O’Neil offered Jones political and speech advice.
The addition of Jones added some anxiety during Keating’s candidacy.
“People like Bobby very much,” Keating said. “He’s an excellent people person.”
Each freshman candidate had many ideas for improving their grade.
“I want to raise a lot of money for our grade, for the socials and all the events coming up,” Pederson said. “I really want to make a positive change to our grade.”
Keating’s fundraising ideas include selling warrior symbol laptop details to students.
“I can help the class,” said Keating. “I think I won because people knew that I felt confident.”
