Fresh off their 27-0 victory last fall in the annual Turkey Day game, the Wayland Warriors football team took the field at Weston High School last Saturday night looking for another win. On the other hand, the Weston Wildcats were hoping to stay undefeated at home this season.

Wayland opened the game with a solid drive down the field, ending on a field goal by Michael Connell. The first quarter ended with no other scoring, and Wayland leading 3-0.

Early in the second quarter, Weston responded with a scoring drive of their own, ending on a 12-yard touchdown run by player Olubiyi Ojo to give the Wildcats the lead of 7-3. Neither team had many offensive plays for the rest of the half, even with sophomore Jeremiah Darlington’s speed.

Halfway through the third quarter, Weston quarterback Liam Wrean scored a 50-yard touchdown run extending Weston’s lead to 14-3. The Warriors drove the ball back down the field for another successful field goal, trimming the Wildcat’s lead to a one possession game at 14-6.

The fourth quarter was a defensive struggle for the Warriors. Aided by punting from Blake Welti, Wayland made key stops on consecutive possessions. The Warriors had two opportunities to score and possibly tie the game but were unable to capitalize on great field position both times. With possession of the ball and just over three minutes left to play, Weston drove down the field and got into the end zone to conclude the game.

Final: Wayland 6, Weston 21
