Today there will be a school-wide moment of silence to remember those who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 during the terrorist attacks, as well as those who were lost in the wars that followed.

It will take place at 8:46 am, the time the first plane hit the World Trade Center.

Principal Allyson Mizoguchi sent an email to all students and faculty, informing them of the occasion.

“I recognize that many, if not most, of our current students have little or no memory of the tragic events of September 11, and obviously the further away from 9/11/01 we become, the more that the significance of this day threatens to diminish,” Mizoguchi said. “I hope that for students, the moment of silence is an opportunity to pause and remember the thousands of lives lost on this day and also to respect and honor the freedoms and relative peace that we enjoy every day.”

The flag outside the high school will also be flown at half-mast as a symbol of mourning and loss. Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker has ordered all American flags at state and town buildings to be lowered in honor of 9/11.

“Staff members like me who were working at WHS in 2001 will well remember the moment that they learned about the terrorist attacks,” Mizoguchi said. “We were here at the high school, teaching classes, working with students, and then heard about this surreal event, so taking a brief moment during our school day to commemorate 9/11, surrounded by colleagues and students, seems particularly fitting.”
