Opinion: Do’s and don’ts for prom

Masha Yakhkind and Lucy Hughes

Do’s:
1. Look for your dress in advance.
You procrastinator, you! Putting in the time early will be worth it when you’re confident on the orange carpet! Procrastination leads to unneeded stress.

2. Make a group with all of the girls in the grade to share your dresses in.
Showing up to prom wearing the same dress as someone else can be awkward, so coordinating with the class beforehand is a good idea. You can see what others are planning to wear in the Prom Dress Facebook group.

3. Coordinate with your friends for pre prom.
What is prom without pictures? Just a night on the town. You have to get together with your friends to save the moment.

4. Spend time with your friends, not just your date.
Prom is not just about who you go with. Spending time with your close friends is what makes the night special. Spending time with friends in a limo, bus or trolley is a blast.

5. Have fun dancing and don’t worry about how you look.
Prom is meant to be a fun experience, so let loose!

6. Make plans for after prom.
…so that you don’t end up just driving to McDonalds with your friends, unless you want to.

7. Wear shoes you can walk in!
We don’t want an accident in the vicinity. What’s the point of buying 7-inch heels that you can barely walk in if you’re going to have trouble dancing and will take them off anyways towards the end of the night?

8. Prompose in a cute way!
No texting allowed… creativity is encouraged.

Don’ts:
1. Don’t ask someone you’ve never talked to before.
Asking people to prom whom you have not had an actual conversation with can result in awkward rejections. Go with someone that you want to spend your night with!

2. If you’re a girl, don’t be afraid of asking a boy!
Confidence is key.

3. Don’t get a spray tan.
You aren’t auditioning for Jersey Shore, so please don’t go crazy. A slight tan is okay, but you don’t want to be looking like Snooki for the whole night.

4. Don’t think it’s the biggest night of your life.
It is not. At least we hope it’s not.

5. Don’t stress about dates months in advance.
A date for prom is not the most important thing.

6. Don’t drop dolla dolla bills on prom.
Don’t spend all of your money having someone else do your hair and makeup. It’s definitely important to look nice but you don’t have to spend a lot of cash getting someone else do it for you.

7. Don’t do anything you will regret the next day.

8. Don’t forget the corsage.
Don’t be that kid. Just don’t.

9. Don’t spend forever getting ready, and don’t overdo it!
Looking gorgeous for prom is a must, but when in doubt, always go natural!

10. Don’t stress too much, it will all work out in the end!
Remember, prom is about having fun. Once you get there, all your stressing won’t matter because you will be having a blast with your friends and bonding with those who you don’t know that well.
