The innovation camp was held last summer at WHS. “I originally chose to do it because it sounded like a really interesting opportunity and it was similar to college summer programs, but it was offered for free, sophomore Samantha Lee said.
WHS students take the first step to raise mental illness awareness
At the beginning of the year, juniors Ayush Kumar, Hallie Luo, Andrew Fang and Zack Goldstein restarted Chess Club. “I think Chess Club has grown since the beginning of the year, and now that it is at lunch, anyone can come and play a game even if they arent a regular to the club,” junior and Chess Club co-leader Ayush Kumar said. “We welcome everyone.”

After senior Eileen Kaewapresert made the pasta dough, the rest of the students got to create the shapes of their choice. “At first, this was only a small group to bond with two special needs students, Melody and Marissa [Wong], because they already had an interest in cooking,” Kaewprasert said.

The Wayland boys varsity soccer team celebrates its goal by running to the sidelines and embracing each other. The high intensity game went into overtime after a 2-2 tie, and it ultimately ended in a Wayland Warriors win of 3-2 against Somerville.

The boys varsity soccer team faces Lincoln-Sudbury at home on Tuesday, Oct. 25. The game resulted in a draw, with the final score being 2-2. The team currently sits with a record of nine wins, five losses and three ties.

Sophomore Luke Chisum finishes first in the freshman three kilometer race at the DCL Championship Meet in 2021. This year, I want to get around 16:30 for a five [kilometer race], Chisum said.

Sophomore Elena Mente prepares before pole vaulting for the Wayland high school track team. My favorite thing to do is pole vault, Mente said. I love getting to meet all new people from it.

Senior Quinn Gleason (front) rows in a double boat. Gleason rows for the Wayland-Weston crew team, and has committed to row for Bates College in the Class of 2026. I’m always trying to improve and get faster, Gleason said. Now that I’m going to Bates College I want to make sure that when I get there the next fall that I’m in shape and ready to go.

Senior Lucas Pralle emerges from the water to take a breath during his 100 meter butterfly event at states. Pralle came in first place at states in his event. It feels amazing to be a part of a team that has performed as well as we have, Pralle said. Everyone puts in the work in practice and our coaches work tirelessly to train and guide us to be the best swimmers we can be.

Senior Eric Hiebert guards his man during a Wayland defensive play while the fan section cheers behind him. I wasnt expecting that many people in the crowd there on senior night, Hiebert said. It was really exciting to see all the people come out. Weve had a bit of a tough start to the season, and then more recently we started winning games, so senior night was kind of like a culmination of all the hard work that weve been working for the entire season.

Join reporter Kris Poole-Evans in a review of the new K-Pop band, NewJeans. NewJeans debuted on July 22, 2022, with their four-track extended play, New Jeans. Since then, the group has put out two singles, Ditto and OMG. Since its debut, the five-member group has been breaking records and consistently making headlines.

The image above is Junior Rachel Yans latest piece, a charcoal still life. Rachels piece is based on a bust statue in Ms. Latimers art room, something that students often use as a reference.The still life process is fun, its a lot of experimentation and trial and error, Yan says.
