Spring sports preview

WSPN's Angela Park previews the spring sport season.

Girls’ Lacrosse:
The girls did great last year, finishing with a record of 13-3-2. The team is expecting to do just as well or better this year. Led by captains Amy Cunningham, Taylor Frieling and Courtney Murtaugh, they hope to go further and push through to the Division II North finals.
Players to watch: Amy Cunningham (senior), Taylor Frieling (junior), Kaitlyn Haase (junior)

Boys’ Lacrosse:
Last year, the team finished with a record of 19-4 and made it to the quarter-finals of the state tournament, making a huge improvement under their new head coach Joel Bates. Bates was named Coach of the Year for Division II, and he will be returning again this season. The boys expect to make it to the state championship.
Players to watch: Roby Williams (senior), Tommy Hunley (senior), Jimmy Lampert (sophomore)

Boys’ Baseball:
Last year the boys had a tough regular season, but they made it in to the playoffs and upset Burlington in the first round. This year, the team is much younger with less than five players with varsity experience. Though they won’t have as much experience, they expect to work hard and do their best, hopefully surprising everybody with a great season.
Players to watch: Ben Caples (senior), Charlie Nuss (junior)

Boys’ and Girls’ Track:
Last year was great for the runners, and everybody made personal improvement throughout the season. This year they hope to continue to build on their performance, and they look forward to welcoming new runners to the team.
Players to watch: Bennett Keyes (senior), Molly Pierce (junior), Elizabeth Jenny (junior)

Boys’ Volleyball:
The boys finished 10-11 last year and made it to the first round of the playoffs. They lost to Cambridge Rindge and Latin, the defending state champions. This season, they will have a much younger team with the seniors gone, but they are confident they will have a successful year.
Players to watch: Andrew Straube (junior)

Boys’ Tennis:
Boys’ tennis had a very strong season last year. Even though they didn’t reach their goal as state champions, they are confident in doing well this season with many experienced players. Their goal is to win finals this year. The Sharton brothers, at the top two singles spots, hope to lead the team to victory.
Players to watch: Will Sharton (junior), Charlie Sharton (freshman)

Girls’ Tennis:
Last year, the team won in the preliminary round in tournament, but they lost in the first round. At the end of the season, their record was even. Their goal this year is to better themselves and make tournament again, but hopefully go further.
Players to watch: Jenna Salgannik (junior), Izzy Essi (freshman)

Softball:
This year, varsity coach Hipolito Rivera and junior varsity coach Erin Ryan return for a promising second year. The team is hoping to pick up new players, and the girls are always looking to improve their final record.
Players to watch: Daisy Lin (senior), Samantha Hayward (senior), Samantha Abbott (junior)

Sailing:
This year is the fourth season for the sailing team at the Wayland High School. Last year, two of their sailors, Nick Memoli and Corey Wise, placed first in the A Division. The team will continue to compete and represent as a newer sport at the high school.
Players to watch: Nick Memoli (sophomore), Corey Wise (junior)

Girls’ and Boys’ Crew:
The boys’ and girls’ teams last year performed extremely well, making it to nationals, and the girls even took home a silver medal. This season, they hope to improve and become faster and stronger as a cohesive team.
Players to watch: Emma Conry (senior), Evan Hughes (sophomore)
