Mirror Mirror: The Nineties

This week, Nina discusses the current nineties trend.

In this first month of school, I’ve seen a lot of people (including myself … guilty) going back to the nineties for fashion inspiration. There’s the preppy side of nineties trends (Clueless, anyone?) and the grunge side, which I think is what our school is leaning toward.

Overalls:
Love them or hate them, overalls are popping up in stores and online shops everywhere. You can’t go into Urban Outfitters, Zara or Forever 21 without running into a long or short pair in various fabrics. Though overalls are often synonymous with farmers and babies, celebrities and style icons like Alexa Chung, Rihanna, Keira Knightley and Cara Delevingne are embracing this new wardrobe staple.

Personally, I love overalls! I bought my first pair toward the end of sophomore year. Depending on what fabric you buy them in, you can style them up and down for any season.

Plaid flannels and tartan skirts:
If you’re going to veer into the nineties fashion path, a plaid flannel or tartan skirt is the easiest way to do it! I’ve seen so many people styling a flannel around their waist or over a simple t-shirt. Flannels also look amazing layered under chunky knits and leather jackets.

Another way to achieve the plaid, or tartan, style is with a cute skirt! My favorite style skirts with the tartan print are mini and skater, though I’ve seen some cute pleated styles. Plaid is everywhere too, as it’s such a nineties print. I’ve seen plaid trousers, dresses, blouses, printed sweatshirts, jumpsuits and even slip on sneakers!

Ripped denim:
This is definitely one of the most widespread nineties trend at our school. So many people are choosing ripped denim jeans, especially with a boyfriend or relaxed fit. Ripped boyfriend jeans are perfect to wear on a lazy day, styled with an oversized sweater or hoodie and converse.

You can also make them a bit more dressed up with collared shirts under sweaters and fun shoes like brogues or ankle boots. Ripped denim is also showing up in skinny jeans, as well as distressed oversized denim jackets.

High-waisted bottoms:
High-waisted bottoms such as skirts, shorts and jeans are a very easy way to get into the nineties trend. My personal favorite is high-waisted jeans. My first pair were Joni jeans from Topshop. Though they are an investment, I wear them sometimes more than twice a week if I’m feeling lazy. They are one of my most worn pieces in my closet. Plus, you can get 10% off with Topshop’s student discount code!

High-waisted pieces look amazing with anything, but especially with crop tops (another nineties trend!).

Chokers:
Chokers are definitely the must have accessory at the minute. My personal favorites are the pendant ones (the elephant, lotus flower and saturn are so cute!), but I love seeing people wear the tattoo style. I searched Etsy, my holy grail shop for jewelry, for their best choker bits and found some great styles for good prices!

There are also lots of videos on YouTube showing you how you can make your own tattoo choker. I am currently on the hunt for a choker for myself and would pair it with a halter top or chunky sweater for winter.

Birkenstocks:
The “ugly shoe” is back. Like overalls, you either love or hate Birkenstocks. I personally was surprised to see how many people have purchased pairs over the summer – so many pairs were worn on the first day of school!

Birkenstocks are quite pricey, but they are so comfortable. They have an option where you can purchase a pair with a soft, foam insole that adds extra comfort to the already comfortable shoe that molds to the shape of your foot. Personally, I have a knock-off pair from Topshop that I got for a much better price. I think it will be hard to wear Birks in our New England winter, but they are perfect for summer and that tropical vacation during winter break.

Slip-On Sneakers:
Our last nineties trend is the slip on sneaker. I’ve seen these pop up in shops across the Natick Mall and on the Internet, and I have a pair of quilted black ones from H&M (similar to the pair I link below)! These are the perfect shoes to transition from summer to fall and are super comfortable for school.

Plus, slip-ons are versatile! I’ve seen them worn with dresses as well as jeans and t-shirts. I saw photos of Emma Watson wearing a pair with amazing black overalls! Though Vans may have created the “original” slip on sneaker, there are so many spins on them with different prints, fabrics, textures, and colors!
