Ask Vilma: The distance question

Ask Vilma: The distance question

Dear Vilma,

i’m an underclassman girl and my senior boyfriend is leaving for college at the end of the summer. do i stay together with him while he goes to college? do long-distance relationships ever work?

i await your response. i’m desperate here.

That sounds like a tough situation. It can be difficult to be a college student and be tied down to someone hours, if not states, away. Freshman year of college is about learning, but more about having fun. Long-distance can work, but it depends on the guy.

If you trust him, and think he’ll make the time to stay in touch with you, it can work out. But that’s the best way to describe it: work. Like every relationship it’s going to take work, even more than it takes now.

However, you have to ask yourself whether you want to spend senior year in a relationship through your webcam and your cell phone, or whether you want to find someone closer. Is he worth it?
