Warrior Weekly: Tough way to end

Sunday, November 13th was the last day I’ll ever play soccer for Wayland High School. We lost a heart breaker 1-0 to two-time defending state champion Concord-Carlise in the Division two North Sectional final.

As the twentieth seed, we beat the thirteenth, the fourth, the fifth, and the first seeded teams on our run to the North Sectional Final game. We played together as one, and with a lot of heart. I’m proud of how we played, if only we could have gotten a few calls we may still be playing.

If you were at the C-C game you know what I’m talking about, but if you weren’t, here’s an explanation:

Early in the second half I had the ball about 25 yards out going towards goal. I took an off balanced shot that went over the diving keeper, hit the cross bar and dropped down. Upon hitting the turf, it bounced up again and looked like it hit the netting, then back to the turf before the goalie grabbed it. Now I’ll be honest, I did not have a great angle on the shot, but it certainly looked like goal to me. About ten minutes later C-C squeaked one past Matt Edwards, (who played an unbelievable game in net) and we lost 1-0.

It was a harsh way to go, but like I said, I have no regrets. Since I was young soccer has been everything to me. It was how I made new friends when I moved to Wayland in first grade, when we played on the color squads. The friendships only grew stronger as we got older. Playing daily at recess, practicing at Claypit, and then playing club. I will never forgot playing club soccer with James Bede and all of my friends. I will certainly miss the game.

I’d like to thank all my coaches through the years, all of the parents including my own that have given me rides to practices or games, all of my teammates and anyone else who has played a role in such an important part of my life.

There hasn’t been a day yet that I haven’t wished we could still be playing. It was a heck of a run, and fun to be apart of. I love all my teammates, every single one of them, but it’s time to move on. Good luck to all the underclassmen with next year’s season.  It’s been a great ride these past few years. I wish I never had to get off.

Whether I realized it or not there were other sports going on in Wayland this weekend. The football team fell to Bedford 20-7, and the cheerleaders had an impressive showing at regionals. These two fall teams are the only teams still playing, leaving Wayland sports in somewhat of a dry spell.

It’s pretty much the off-season now so I won’t tell you to check WarriorScores for this week’s scores, but rather for the entire fall’s scores. Enjoy the the time off.
