Warrior Weekly: Football Pride

Harry has high hopes for this year’s football team and is starting to compare this year to 2006, when the Warrior football team last won the Super Bowl.

Well, we are at that point in the fall season where only football remains. There were tough losses this past week for field hockey and girls soccer who were eliminated from their respective playoffs. However, another Wayland team has made it to the postseason.

The football team clinched a playoff berth after beating Bedford on Friday night to win the DCL Small. The Warriors won the game 28-0. Wait, 28-0 sounds pretty familiar.

Lets think back to the fall of 2006.

The top song on the music charts was “Weird” Al Yankovic’s “White and Nerdy.” The St. Louis Cardinals just beat the Detroit Tigers in the World Series. The Red Sox were coming out of a very disappointing season in which they were plagued by injuries. “Casino Royale” (the first James Bond movie with Daniel Craig) was first released in the movie theaters. The Wayland High School Football team beat Marshfield 28-0 to win the Super Bowl.

The Warriors came into this year with Super Bowl expectations. Now that they made the playoffs and won the DCL Small, they have a chance to fulfill these expectations.

In fact, 2012 isn’t all that different from 2006. The Tigers did just lose the World Series, the Red Sox stunk and were beaten by injuries and “Skyfall,” the new James Bond movie, was released on Friday.

It almost seems perfect that the Warriors clinched their playoff berth with a 28-0 win. Let’s hope the similarities keep on coming. The whole school now has a chance to build around a football team that has a chance to win the Super Bowl.

For my quote this week, I think I will stick with the 2006 theme. This quote is from Dennis Green, the Arizona Cardinals coach, after his team blew a 23-6 lead in the fourth quarter.

“The Bears are who we thought they were! And we let ‘em off the hook!” -Dennis Green
