Wayland boys varsity volleyball won the opening playoff game against Pioneer Charter School of Science with a 3-0 sweep on Saturday May 30, kicking off the championship season. The game was a chance for the usual lineup to be mixed around and for players to challenge their flexibility with positions.

His students know him as Mr. F.D, a passionate social studies teacher and spreader of “Mofle,” a cartoon sketch he leaves at the local Dunkin Donuts and Starbucks. However, Daniel Fernandez-Davila has left a lasting legacy in the Wayland community that goes beyond teaching. Through his volunteer initiatives and creation of the Peru trip, he has given the gift of experience to students and Wayland community members.

In the home of 2011 WHS graduate Lauren Astley’s father and founder of the Lauren Dunne Astley Memorial Fund Malcom Astley sit photos of L. Astley, along with a stuffed dog. M. Astley thinks that loss is something that children should be learning how to cope with from a young age, as well as acknowledging that grief and loss doesn’t only come from human death. “Another is acknowledging the phenomenon of loss, which a breakup is,” M. Astley said. “Training early on around the silliest of things. You remember that first stuffed animal that you had, and if you lost it or left it at home when the family went on a trip and you went out of your mind as a four year old. The first goldfish that died, another pet, and the progression, which is inevitable, and we don't, we're not open about it.”

Troy Hoyt finishes the Boston Marathon, running for the Hoyt Foundation. T. Hoyt is the son of Hoyt Foundation CEO Russ Hoyt. “[Running a marathon] might seem like a big thing, when it’s presented to you at first, but if you break it up and just keep telling yourself, “Yes, you can,” you can start chipping away at it. And before you know it, you’ll be running the whole 26 miles, and you won’t even think twice about it.” T. Hoyt said.

While there is a relatively small number of people diagnosed, rare diseases are the center of a web of connections that bring a variety of unique communities together. Research and medical advancements could not be possible without collaboration and communication between these groups, emphasizing the role of supporting one another when solving so-called impossible cases. “Rare patient communities are educated and powerful forces that hold us accountable to deliver those meaningful outcomes that matter most today,” Sarepta Therapeutics Executive Medical Director Stefanie Mason said.

Senior Gabby Fargnoli's piece of a bee extracting pollen from a flower. Fargnoli is one of the artists who will be featured in the annual WHS art show on Monday, Dec. 17. "I’ve always been creative, and art is a way I like to express my creativity," Fargnoli said.

The Madrigals perform at WHS in 2016. The group is performing at WHS on November 26. "Our new members are going to be a new energy," junior and Madrigal member Josh Ellenbogen said.

Above, freshman Sidney Toga performs with the WHS T-Tones a cappella group. Toga has been singing since elementary school, and greatly enjoys making music. “[Singing is] just fun,” Toga said. “I enjoy doing it, and it’s just a fun thing to do for me.”
