Waylands School Committee is set to talk about the possible vaccine mandate the week of Monday, June 14. “From the school committee, I know of one person who definitely feels like we should mandate it because she talked to me about putting it on the agenda, but I dont know about how the other people feel about it, School Committee Chair Jeanne Downs said.

This year, Senior Assassin is looking very different. Seniors are required to use water guns to assassinate their targets to ensure that the game remains safe. “There are also detailed rules on how someone can make an assassination, such as it has to be done with a water gun and you cannot make physical contact with your target,” senior Meredith Prince said.

Senior Meghan Flathers altered a newspaper in an artistic way with her piece “Altered Newspaper #1. “I have become really interested by altered books [and] newspapers as an art form because I feel it allows me to make a political statement without being so blunt,” Flathers said. “The actual act of changing a piece of the newspaper seems very powerful to me. I am editing a piece of news just as the media does.”

When the pandemic hit, the TEDx Core team was initially discouraged, as it was uncertain if they could still host the TEDxYouth event. However, the TEDx Core team, speakers and coaches persevered and adapted. “We took a pause on planning during the beginning of quarantine but then began hosting our group meetings via Zoom,” senior Aydan McGah said. “We then decided we had to record all of the talks on video in order to hold a virtual viewing of them. We mapped out a timeline for the speakers in order for them to be ready for the recordings, and we set up an outdoor recording space at my house. We created a large TEDx sign and set up lights to make an appealing video background.”

During the pandemic, fine arts teachers are using Zoom for more than just online learning. With the help of grants from CAPA and the Lauren Dunne Astley memorial fund, band teacher Joseph Oneschuk and chorus teacher Rachel Carroll arranged masterclasses for their band and chorus students to highlight accomplished BIPOC artists and performers. “I really felt an importance to feature Black artists, especially in the turbulent time that we were in, and to celebrate Black artists,” Oneschuk said.

As a part of Kindness Month during December at the high school, many students opted to write thank-you cards to their teachers which were provided by the Student Council. “Over the course of the week, weve gotten much participation from students, resulting in over 120 letters,” Student Council President Elizabeth Zhong said.

The Family Promise club, started by junior Maeve Myles and sophomore Elena Liu, is running a cleaning supply drive for Family Promise MetroWest. Donations can be dropped off in a bin outside the Wayland High School main office. “As a club, we strive to help others and support local homeless families through the Family Promise Metrowest organization,” Myles said.
