The Wayland Police Department have issued a warning on the rise of scammers during the holiday season. “Hang up [the phone]. if you get a text and you do not know who it's from, just delete it. Don't click on any links, nothing,” Wayland police chief Edward Burman said. “Every single one of them is a scam.”
Police department issues warnings about holiday scams
WHS’s Connect Program ran its annual holiday gift drive to fulfill the wishlist of children enrolled in the Dorchester based non-profit daycare organization, the Yawkey Center. This drive brought the town together and impacted both the students in Connect, as well as the greater Wayland community. “You could see how helpful the town was and how our community came together and wanted to help out a community that wasn't our own [and] kids who were less fortunate than we were,” senior and Connect Program member Jordynn Lee said.

Wayland High School will be hosting its second annual Wayland Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Fair on Sunday, Dec. 8 in the high school commons. Co-organizers and seniors Arya Samaratunga and Eunjee Kang worked together to plan an event where anyone can come and embrace the intricacy of the STEM program and community.

Chocolate Therapy co-owner Pam Griffin smiles at the counter of her chocolate shop, located on 63 Andrew Ave. in the Wayland Town Center. The shop sells a variety of handmade chocolates, coffee, hot chocolate, ice cream and more. Recently, Chocolate Therapy's nut bark was named to "Oprah's Favorite Things 2024 List." The nut bark comes in a box with three flavors: milk chocolate cashew, dark chocolate almond and white chocolate pistachio.

WHS student-run nonprofit organization, Hoops For a Home Court, is dedicated towards raising money for a public sports community center in Wayland. After raising over $20,000, co-leader and junior Cole Zachery explained that there was still more to be done. “This is definitely a step in the right direction, but we have a lot more to do before we reach our final goal,” Zachery said.

The Boy Scouts will be selling trees on Fridays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Saturdays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sundays noon to 6 p.m. until they sell out. “This event is one of the things that [the Boy Scouts] get to have a direct impact on the community,” freshman Alex Macleod said.

WHS guidance counselor Jim Girard is now coaching Wayland football after stepping down from being Lincoln Sudbury's head coach. “I stepped down as the head coach at LS following the 2023 season so that I could spend more time with and care for my ailing parents who live out of state,” Girard said.

The principals of Wayland Public Schools came together to make a district-wide birthday card for teacher Mike O’Connor. O’Connor was diagnosed with cancer in 2017 and has been on medical leave ever since. Principal Brian Jones, other staff, students and their families have described O’Connor to truly change the lives of everyone he met. “Certain teachers name’s continually come up, and no surprise, Mr. O'Connor is one of those teachers,” fifth grade teacher Jennifer Sole-Robertson said. “Year after year, I hear parents and students say that third grade was the year that they ‘became a student,' started enjoying school or started understanding math when they had not previously.”

As the game began, the players on the sideline held each other to show their support for their teammates. While players were not currently playing in the game, they wore a green pinnie over their uniforms.

For many high school students trying to get their permit or license, the pandemic has made the process a lot harder. Due to the transition to a more online format, students' steps to accomplish to get their permit seem more complicated than usual. “It was just way more confusing and the instructions weren’t that clear," sophomore Sarah Foley. "I’m pretty sure some of the RMVs had less hours, so you had to change your schedule to go. I just wish there were more hours available for appointments on the weekend so I could have [been able to] apply earlier.”

With the high school's academic curriculum rigors, many students feel overwhelmed and have faced mental health issues in their school career. "It's okay not to be okay, and to be overwhelmed," assistant principal Laura Cole said. "It's up to adults to stop telling kids [that] this is what you need to do to be successful. We need to allow kids to figure out what success is on their path and support that."
