Ask Vilma: Why no McDog?

Why doesn’t McDonald’s sell hot dogs?

About six years ago I was living in Rhode Island as a crab fisherman when I stumbled upon a McDonald’s that sold hot dogs. After a long day of grueling work on the salty brine I was looking forward to a delicious Big Mac, but my fellow fisherman told me to try a hot dog. He was a smart man so I decided to follow his suggestion. When the man at the counter handed it to me, it looked like any other hot dog I’d ever seen. I sat down at a table and took my first bite. My teeth easily broke through its rubbery exterior, causing the release of its repugnant juices which quickly slid over my taste buds. My face was contorted in an expression of disgust, to the amusement and pleasure of my friend. I took one more bite and then spit it out on my tray. My friend explained to me that the hot dog was a promotional menu item offered by McDonald’s. The locals had all tried it and each one of them had the same reaction as I. Only McDonald’s in certain regions of the United States were promoting the hot dog about six years ago. The hot dog did not catch on, so McDonald’s soon took it off all menus.
