On Sat. April 23, the Wayland Student Press Network won second place in the Best of Show category and a fourth consecutive Online Pacemaker award. The Journalism Education Association (JEA) presented WSPN with the 2023 First Amendment Press Freedom Award. Nine students from WSPN also received awards in student media contests.

Many schools around the country ban books each day. WHS has no banned books, and even had a display in the library, encouraging students to take out banned books this past September.

Grub Guru, an Asian fusion and street food truck, has only just begun coming to Lavin’s Liquors in Wayland. The idea of bringing food trucks onto Lavin’s property is quite recent, originating only three years ago during the COVID-19 pandemic. “The location is beautiful here,” Grub Guru employee Louis Ortiz said. “I love it, it’s very relaxed, and it’s great.”

Former Wayland High School Principal Patrick Tutwiler becomes the new secretary of education of Massachusetts under Governor Maura Healey. I really want to be a partner to the people who are experiencing education at all levels, Tutwiler said.

At the beginning of the year, juniors Ayush Kumar, Hallie Luo, Andrew Fang and Zack Goldstein restarted Chess Club. “I think Chess Club has grown since the beginning of the year, and now that it is at lunch, anyone can come and play a game even if they arent a regular to the club,” junior and Chess Club co-leader Ayush Kumar said. “We welcome everyone.”

After senior Eileen Kaewapresert made the pasta dough, the rest of the students got to create the shapes of their choice. “At first, this was only a small group to bond with two special needs students, Melody and Marissa [Wong], because they already had an interest in cooking,” Kaewprasert said.

Custodial staff at Wayland High School share their experiences working here at the school. It’s a basic job, it’s hard, we do a lot of work, WHS custodian Sean Slavin said. That’s one thing, when we get new people that we want to interview, we tell them ‘It’s not hard work, it’s a lot of work.’

Sophomore Jillian Mele hits sticks with her teammates after getting her stick checked by the referee. Our team is very close this year, and I have many of my close friends on the team, Mele said. It really does feel like a family.
Girls lacrosse scores a win against Winchester
Sophomore Luke DiPietrio-Froio and junior Ben Wright participate in the boys 110 meter hurdles. Wright got second, and Dipietrio-Froio placed third. Both ran in the 400 meter hurdle race as well. My favorite thing about racing is probably just trying to get the best time I can, Wright said.

Senior Amartya Nagesha has always been focused on improving her singing skills. After joining the Honors Concert Choir, and taking numerous years of singing lessons, Nagesha has started applying to music colleges such as Berklee College of Music.

The image above is one of freshman Tristen Chows metalsmithing projects. Chow concluded that this was one of the hardests projects she’s done all year. “Everyone else was making something flat, like a landscape, or a medal, but I wanted to do something different, Chow said. It took time and sweat, but I had a blast.

The image above is Junior Rachel Yans latest piece, a charcoal still life. Rachels piece is based on a bust statue in Ms. Latimers art room, something that students often use as a reference.The still life process is fun, its a lot of experimentation and trial and error, Yan says.
