Questionable calls sink the Warriors

The Wayland Varsity Boys Soccer Team brought a 5-3-2 record into Friday’s (October 10) game against DCL best Bedford. Wayland went up 2-0 in the first ten minutes with two early goals by Mike Trueblood and Captain Alex Burgun-Tower. They remained on top and dominated the possession for the rest of the first half and most of the second. With five minutes left, Bedford scored its first goal when their center midfielder was left unmarked (undefended) and a cross pass came in from the corner which the midfielder headed in.

Bedford stayed on the attack with another cross pass into the Wayland eighteen-yard box. When Wayland Goalkeeper Anil Singhal went out to catch the ball, he was hit by one of the Bedford players, bumping him off track from the ball. Then with ball loose in the eighteen, Bedford capitalized by tying the game at 2-2. After arguing for a foul call on the play, captain Pat Tardiff was given a red card and ejected. Later, with Bedford on a breakaway, Alex Burgun-Tower made a sliding tackle, which the ref called a foul and gave Burgun-Tower a yellow card and Bedford a free kick. Bedford scored on the free kick, giving the Buccaneers the 3-2 win.

The JV team, however, came away with a victory, beating Bedford 2-1, with goals from Chris D’Amico and Graham Mellen.
