Best of the MetroWest: Helen’s

Ally Toto is on a mission to find the best shops, restaurants, events and other entertainment hubs in the MetroWest area. On her third stop, Ally visited Helen's, a family-owned restaurant located in Concord Center.

Helen’s restaurant in Concord Center has been owned by a Wayland family, the Denisevichs, since the 1930’s. I recently ate dinner there, and it was absolutely delicious.

Upon walking inside, I was greeted by a cozy, casual atmosphere. The walls are painted a cheery yellow, and it has a 50’s diner feel.

Helen’s serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and desserts. There is a wide array of food to choose from to appeal to everyone’s palate. Helen’s menu is described as “old-fashioned American favorites to innovative diverse dishes using produce from our local farmers.” They work with the “Farm at Walden Woods,” so they are supporting their community while providing food that is fresh. They also serve Brigham’s ice cream.

For dinner I had the Beer Battered Fish (fish ‘n chips). It was succulent and tasty with a crispy coating, and it came with fries and coleslaw. For an appetizer, I tried the pot stickers, which were “pan seared chicken dumplings with Szechuan.” They were some of the best I’ve ever had.

After a hearty dinner, I decided on the raspberry sorbet. It had an authentic raspberry flavor, and it was light and refreshing. However, I got the kids cup, and it was tiny. Next time I’ll order a small cup instead because the sorbet was so tasty!

The wait staff was kind and helpful and served our food quickly. I arrived later at night, and the staff was chatty and friendly even as they were closing up for the night.

The only downfall at Helen’s is that they only take cash.

Helen’s is a great place to go for a meal or just dessert with your family, friends or by yourself.
