Friday, February 12th, the Wayland Warriors varsity boys hockey team faced the Weston Wildcats, in one of their best-played games of the year.

After the 1st period, the game was tied 0-0. The Warriors came out of the locker room with boat loads of energy to start the second. Weston goaltender Sam Goodman was fatigued by countless slap shots from E.J., “slap-happy”, Nicholas. Finally, mid-way through the 2nd, junior captain Zach Bastarache put in the game’s first goal. Kevin Goodfellow ripped a shot off Goodman’s pads and Bastarache pounded home the rebound.

As the third period began with the teams locked at 1. It was a heated 3rd period. Deep into the third period captain  Bastarache lit the lamp again when he sniped one past Goodman. Evan, “the Barbarian”, Barber assisted the goal. With 1:09 left in the game Weston snuck one past Cogan “the Catman” Register, but Catman executed multiple mind-blowing saves that kept the Warriors in the game.

Again, the Warriors out-hit their opponents throughout the game. Leading the team in hits were Bastarache and fellow junior Mark Haffey. “It was our most complete game this season. We were physical and moved the puck well; All in all we came to play,” said Bastarache.

The result of the game was a 2-2 tie. The Warriors’ playoff dreams were crushed on the 16th, when they fell to Boston Latin. However, the team sent six players to the Dual County League All-Star game last Saturday, Cogan Register, Mark Haffey, Ian Ball, Evan Barber, E.J. Nichols, and Zach Bastarache. Bastarache was also named to the all-conference team.
