RecPass program founders Karen Kelly and Amanda Shaw celebrate the launch of RecPass on Monday, Sept. 11. The program aims to provide accessible after-school childcare for working Wayland parents. I think weve fundamentally changed the fate of after-school childcare in Wayland, and my hope is that it never goes back, Kelly said. It will only get better going forward.

At the beginning of the year, juniors Ayush Kumar, Hallie Luo, Andrew Fang and Zack Goldstein restarted Chess Club. “I think Chess Club has grown since the beginning of the year, and now that it is at lunch, anyone can come and play a game even if they arent a regular to the club,” junior and Chess Club co-leader Ayush Kumar said. “We welcome everyone.”

After senior Eileen Kaewapresert made the pasta dough, the rest of the students got to create the shapes of their choice. “At first, this was only a small group to bond with two special needs students, Melody and Marissa [Wong], because they already had an interest in cooking,” Kaewprasert said.

Custodial staff at Wayland High School share their experiences working here at the school. It’s a basic job, it’s hard, we do a lot of work, WHS custodian Sean Slavin said. That’s one thing, when we get new people that we want to interview, we tell them ‘It’s not hard work, it’s a lot of work.’

Senior Amartya Nagesha has always been focused on improving her singing skills. After joining the Honors Concert Choir, and taking numerous years of singing lessons, Nagesha has started applying to music colleges such as Berklee College of Music.

The image above is one of freshman Tristen Chows metalsmithing projects. Chow concluded that this was one of the hardests projects she’s done all year. “Everyone else was making something flat, like a landscape, or a medal, but I wanted to do something different, Chow said. It took time and sweat, but I had a blast.

Since then, WHSs swimming and diving teams have not competed in-person at a state or sectional meet due to the pandemic, and they participated in virtual events throughout the last season. “We feel confident that we’ll have them ready regardless of what the state tells us to do or when we can do it,” swim and dive coach Michael Foley said. “We’re going to be prepared.”

Our last practice before Christmas we all give each other our presents in a big circle, and open them together, senior Hilla Almog said.
